Fractional Brownian Motion
Overview
Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) 은 표준 Brownian motion에서 딱 하나의 성질만 바꾼 확장이다. 표준 BM은 increment들이 독립(independent) 이지만, fBm은 increment들 사이에 long-range correlation (memory) 을 넣는다. 이 상관의 부호와 강도를 조절하는 단 하나의 parameter가 Hurst exponent
viscoelastic medium이나 polymer network 안에서의 subdiffusion을 기술하는 대표적인 phenomenological model이며, chromatin locus dynamics의 유효 기술로 널리 쓰인다.

가장 혼동하기 쉬운 지점. Rouse polymer에는 fBm이 두 번 등장하며, 둘은 서로 다른 축을 파라미터로 갖는 별개의 process이다.

따라서:
- ideal Rouse chain의 conformation은 fractal dimension
이며, space-filling이 아니다. ideal chain은 공간 속 random walk이므로 당연한 결과다. - 3차원을 채우는 conformation(
, 즉 )은 fractal globule 이며, 이것은 Rouse ideal chain이 아니다. - monomer의 시간 궤적이
인 것은 전혀 별개의 사실이며, “한 monomer가 자기 주변을 recurrent하게 빠짐없이 훑는다”는 compact exploration을 뜻한다.
chromatin 문헌에서 “space-filling polymer”는 관용적으로 fractal globule의 conformation을 가리키므로, monomer의 시간 궤적을 설명할 때 이 단어를 쓰면 안 된다. 대신 compact / recurrent exploration 이라고 쓴다.

Physical origin

MSD exponent만으로는 둘을 구별할 수 없으므로, ergodicity breaking parameter, p-variation, Gaussianity test 등으로 판별한다.
Questions & Insights
- 실제 chromatin locus 궤적이 fBm인가 CTRW인가? MSD exponent는 같아도 ergodicity/Gaussianity 검정으로 갈라야 하며, MINFLUX 같은 고해상도 tracking 데이터가 이 판별의 열쇠가 된다.
